Philippoussis wins Newport title
Australian Mark Philippoussis defeated American Justin Gimelstob 6-3, 7-5 to win the Hall of Fame championships in Newport, Rhode Island. The 29 year old former world number 9 needed a wildcard at the event after injuries saw his ranking plummet to No. 214 in the world.
The former Wimbledon and US Open finalist snared his 11th career ATP Tour title and his first since Shanghai in 2003 after going through the tournament without dropping his serve at the only event held on grass in North America.

"I've been working extremely hard and this is when it pays off," adding. "I felt like I had good rhythm on my serve. I just felt good the whole week."
